This week’s book recommendation is Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Let me start off by saying that Laurie Halse Anderson just rules. I mean, really. Her writing is awesome. Her stories are thought-provoking and intriguing. Her characters just come to life. I’m envious. I love it. Anderson also wrote the book that I did for my latest Book vs Movie post–Speak. Speak is also an awesome book, but somehow I loved Wintergirls even more.

It’s like she grabbed my heart and wouldn’t let go. Great books hold me captive until I have finished every last word. This book did that to me. I’ve read most of the author’s other books, but this is the one that touched me the most. And that’s why I’m recommending it. If you enjoy real teenage issue books, I bet you will love it.

Intrigued? Here’s the synopsis:

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery
