Book Recommendation of the Week: The Giver

This week’s book recommendation is The Giver by Lois Lowry. I can’t recommend the rest of the series because I haven’t read them yet. I really want to, though.

The Giver was first introduced to me in English class during sixth grade. Like most books in sixth grade that were mandatory, I didn’t like it when I first read it. However, when I read it the second time, I loved it. It’s one of my all-time favorites. It’s been around for a while (1993), but I love the world-building and can’t wait to read more about it in the other books. I didn’t even know there were other books after The Giver until last year. There’s also a rumor going around that a movie may be in the works. If so, I hope that they keep it as close to the book as possible. I think it would be a neat movie adaptation if done well. I guess we’ll see.

Intrigued? Here’s the synopsis:

Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
